The History of Technology

Printing presses, steam engines, silicon: the tools that rebuilt the world.

220 events across 7 eras

Every era of this millennium was transformed by its tools. This timeline follows technology from medieval windmills, compasses and gunpowder through the printing press that industrialized knowledge itself, and on to the steam engines that shrank distance in the nineteenth century. The modern entries come fast: the telegraph and telephone collapsing communication time, powered flight at Kitty Hawk, the transistor, the first computers filling whole rooms and then vanishing into pockets, the internet stitching the planet into one nervous system. The corpus scores each invention by significance, and the listings below surface the most consequential per era, every one linked to a full event page. Follow the era headings to see each period whole, or trace a single thread from workshop to network.
