HBO's ten-year medieval fantasy epic, the closest thing television had produced to a global synchronous water-cooler event, concluded with a season so disappointing that fans started a petition to remake it. Eighteen million people watched the finale anyway. The era of must-see television, in any unified sense, ended that night.
