Jackie Robinson breaks baseball color line

The Brooklyn Dodgers put Jackie Robinson at first base on Opening Day, the first African American in the major leagues in the twentieth century. He endured death threats, vicious taunts, and base-runners who tried to spike him. He won Rookie of the Year. American sports, and, slowly, American society, had crossed a line.
