Conrad's Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad, a Polish sailor turned English novelist, serialized a short novel in Blackwood's Magazine about an ivory-trading expedition up the Congo. It was, among other things, the first honest indictment of European imperialism written in English. A century later it would still be read - and argued about - as both masterpiece and symptom.
