Preliminary Peace of Paris

November 30, 1782

American and British negotiators, meeting secretly in Paris without consulting France, initialed preliminary articles recognizing American independence and granting the new nation territory to the Mississippi. Franklin, seventy-six and aching with gout, outmaneuvered Shelburne's diplomats with patience and ambiguity. The Revolution was over on paper before the armies knew it.
