Peter Introduces Western Calendar
1699
Tsar Peter I decreed that Russia would henceforth celebrate the new year on January first instead of September first, and that years would be numbered from the birth of Christ rather than from the creation of the world. The first Russian January first as new year's day was 1700. Time itself had been westernized.
