University privileges at Bologna

Frederick Barbarossa granted the students and masters of Bologna the Authentica Habita, guaranteeing them protection under imperial law, exemption from collective punishments, and the right to be tried by their own teachers. The charter is often cited as the first formal university privilege in Europe. It established the principle that scholars formed a distinct legal community, a concept that would shape the institutional independence of European universities for centuries.
