Asiatic Society of Bengal Founded
Sir William Jones, a Welsh judge and prodigious linguist recently arrived in Calcutta, founded the Asiatic Society to study the languages and histories of 'Asia.' Within two years he would announce that Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin came from a common source. Indo-European linguistics and modern Orientalism were born in the same meeting.
Cartwright Invents the Power Loom
A Leicestershire parson named Edmund Cartwright, who had never seen a weaver work, designed a loom driven by a steam engine. His first prototype barely functioned. But within twenty years his invention would turn handloom weaving into a starving trade and put the rhythm of the shuttle into iron. The power loom completed the mechanization of textiles that Arkwright's water frame and Hargreaves's spinning jenny had begun.
Pitt's India Act
The younger Pitt's reform created a British government Board of Control overseeing East India Company affairs in India. The Company kept its commerce; the Crown took political responsibility. The awkward dual system would last, and slowly shift the balance until 1858, when the Crown absorbed everything. The act was Parliament's first serious assertion that governing millions of Indians was a public duty, not a commercial privilege.
Herschel's Catalog of Nebulae
William Herschel, aided by his extraordinary sister Caroline, began cataloging thousands of distant nebulae with his giant reflecting telescopes. He proposed that the Milky Way was an island system of stars in a universe of many such islands. The universe suddenly became much bigger than Newton's, and Caroline became the first salaried female astronomer.
