Third Battle of Panipat
Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Afghan king, met the Maratha Empire on the old killing-ground north of Delhi. By nightfall tens of thousands of Marathas were dead - their leadership shattered, their northern imperium broken. The slaughter created the political vacuum the East India Company would rush to fill. The battle ended Maratha ambitions for pan-Indian hegemony and left northern India fragmented and vulnerable.
Harrison's H4 Marine Chronometer Tested
John Harrison, a Yorkshire carpenter turned clockmaker, sent his fourth sea-clock - a watch the size of a small plate - on a voyage to Jamaica. It lost five seconds in eighty-one days. For the first time in history, a ship could know its longitude. The Royal Navy withheld the prize for years.
Transit of Venus Observed Worldwide
Astronomers from Siberia to St. Helena trained telescopes on the sun as Venus crossed its disc - trying, per Halley's old scheme, to measure the solar system. Clouds foiled many; French observers in India were caught by the war. The century's first great international scientific collaboration still produced real numbers.
Rousseau's Julie, or the New Héloïse
A philosophical novel about a Swiss tutor and his noble pupil, written in tearful letters, became the best-selling book of the eighteenth century. Readers wrote to Rousseau as if the characters were real. The modern idea that fiction should make you cry - and that crying is good - starts here.
