2024 becomes first year above 1.5C

Copernicus said 2024 was the first full calendar year in the modern record with global average temperatures more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The announcement did not mean the Paris threshold had been permanently breached, but it showed how close the world had come to that longer-term limit.
