Fusion ignition at Livermore

Scientists at the National Ignition Facility in California announced that for the first time a fusion reaction had produced more energy than the lasers used to start it. The gain was small and the laser inefficient, but a threshold imagined since the 1950s had been crossed. The sun could, in principle, be lit on Earth.
