Battle of Okinawa

April 1945

American marines landed on the largest Japanese home island yet taken and fought for eighty-two days in a meat-grinder campaign. Twelve thousand Americans died, perhaps a hundred thousand Japanese soldiers and civilians, many of the latter pushed to suicide. The battle helped convince Truman that an invasion of the Japanese mainland would be horrifically costly.
