Black Week
December 11, 1899
In seven days in December, British forces were beaten at Stormberg, Magersfontein, and Colenso - three consecutive defeats in the Boer War that shocked London into the realization that its army was badly outmatched. Reinforcements were rushed out. By the time the war ended, Britain had committed nearly half a million men and still could not quite win it.
