Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders - a motley volunteer cavalry of cowboys and Ivy Leaguers - on foot up a Cuban ridge, alongside Black regular army regiments whose contribution he would later minimize. Spanish Mausers killed a hundred Americans. The charge made Roosevelt famous, and within three years he was president.
