Atlanta Compromise

At the Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta, Booker T. Washington urged Black southerners to accept segregation in exchange for economic opportunity: "In all things purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand." White audiences loved it. Du Bois spent the next decade arguing it sold African Americans short.
