Serbian First Uprising
July 12, 1804
Led by a hog trader named Karadjordje, the Serbs of the Belgrade pashalik rose against their Ottoman janissary overlords and, to everyone's surprise, began winning. Over the next nine years they would carve out a fragile autonomous principality. The first stirrings of Balkan nationalism had an armed peasant on a horse at their center.
