Jefferson Wins by House Vote

After the electoral vote tied between Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr, the House of Representatives deadlocked for thirty-six ballots before Alexander Hamilton's quiet intervention against Burr broke the tie. A republic that had nearly torn itself apart over the count would inaugurate its third president on time. The Twelfth Amendment would follow.
